Parental Support

Wow, I just got extremely full just now. I was watching a part of the movie “Akeelah and the Bee,” with my mom. The scene when Akeelah went home proud of making it to the next round of the Bee. She told her mom, who was disciplining one of her sons, and she didn’t even congratulate her. This immediately brought me back to memories of my experience in the schools when parents showed little to no interest in how there children were doing academically, but more so when they were on showcase or were having behavior issues. One thing I pride myself in doing when I talk to children is that I express my concern for why they don’t care about, like their education. I know that school is not exactly the same that it used to be 5 or 10 years ago. However, as educators there always to be a genuine care for children to internalize what they are learning, for long term growth instead of short term memorizing. I don’t know what my future has in store for me, but somewhere in my lifetime I would like to build and implement a program to supplement what children have learned in school and have them teach it back to adults.
